FDIC – Issued Request for Information on Digital Assets

May 17, 2021 – FDIC requested information and comments on current, potential digital asset activities applicable to the use of digital assets by insured depository institutions (IDIs), and affiliates. Aims to help inform FDIC’s understanding related to unique considerations for digital assets.

Digital Assets Request
Request noted that banks are increasingly exploring the emerging digital asset ecosystem. Being used in financial markets, intermediation, settlement, and payment systems. Provided broad categories applicable to digital asset use cases, and related activities. These categories included technology solutions, asset-based, liability-based activities, custodial activities, and other activities that do not align with others that have already been listed.

Comments Sought
Feedback was requested on current and potential use cases involving IDIs and their affiliates. Listed questions related to risk and compliance management in conducting such digital asset activities, as well as supervision, deposit insurance, resolution, and any other additional considerations.

Comments from interested parties on digital assets should be sent by July 16, 2021.
